Sherrie Garner

Sherrie GarnerINTRODUCTION:
Sherrie Garner is a single thirty-four year old. She has a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and is taking graduate courses in Counseling at WVU. She is a Mental Health Specialist at Chestnut Ridge Hospital, working with adolescents.  She also works as a substitute teacher in Monongalia County Schools.

WHY DO YOU WALK?
I walk for fitness. I participate in the "100 Miles in 100 Days" program through the University. If the PRT opened at 6:00 AM instead of 6:30 AM, I would walk to the Walnut Street PRT station and ride the PRT to work. However, since I have to be at work at 6:45 AM, I have to drive to work instead.

WHY DO YOU LOVE WALKING?
Walking is an escape for me. I prefer to walk outdoors because I like the open space. However, when the weather is bad I walk indoors at the WVU Student Recreation Center.

WHAT IS YOUR TOUGHEST OBSTACLE TO WALKING?
The toughest obstacles for me are motivation and maintenance. I want to maintain the progress I have achieved to this point.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR NEW WALKERS?
I think people should find a buddy to walk with. This helps with motivation.

WHAT IS THE COOLEST BENEFIT OF WALKING?
Walking makes me feel good both physically and mentally.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SURPRISE ABOUT WALKING?
The overall wellness benefits of walking surprised me the most. Just 30 minutes a day can drastically improve cardiovascular health.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
There are so many opportunities for people to walk in Morgantown. I have participated in an Aqua Jogging program at Marilla Pool through the Summer BOPARC Program that was very enjoyable.
