The WV Walking League is designed to promote 30+minutes of daily, moderate-intensity walking, as recommended by the U.S. Surgeon General. Open to all ages and groups, it's a new, exciting, and fun team-based walking adventure offered for the first time in the summer of 2006 by BOPARC and WVU Hospitals, and WV Walks.

Come join in. Walking is an easy way to exercise: it takes little time, gives you energy, and improves health.

The WV Walking League is similar to league-based sports program of local recreation departments but specifically for walking.

Current and past Challenges:

  • BOPARC / WVUH's Summer Walking Challenge: July 2 - September 30, 2006
  • Mon Health System's HOLIDAY Walking Challenge: November 5 - December 30, 2006
  • Winter Walking Challenge: January 1 - Feb 24, 2007

Other details:

  • Individuals of all ages and groups may participate.
  • Ten people will form a league team.
  • Team members will record the number of minutes they walk and report this to their Team Captain each Monday before 10 a.m. The Team Captain will report the team's weekly score (in minutes walked) to League officials each Monday before Noon. (Should the team captain, for some reason be unable to do this for a particular week, s/he will designate someone to make this report for him/her).
  • League officials will circulate team scores each week during a Challenge and also send the scores to The Dominion Post for weekly posting in the newspaper.
  • Prizes and awards will be announced at the end of each month during the challenge.
  • To compete in a specific challenge, enrollments must be received by 5 p.m. at least one week prior to the starting date of the challenge, or as otherwise designated.

Rules:

  • Individuals of all ages and groups may participate. Teams are comprised of 10 members each.
  • League officials may enroll individuals or groups of less than ten to make a team.
  • Each team has a captain. Each team has a name.
  • The Challenge is designed to encourage a minimum of 30 minutes of daily walking. Therefore, walk as much as you can (the more the better1) but the official weekly report will reflect not more than 30 minutes daily per individual team member.
  • The team that walks the most minutes in Month 1 (and, Month 2, when applicable), and all two (or three) months combined win the prizes.
  • In case of ties, the winner will be selected by random drawing from among the tied teams.
  • Minutes walked are verified by signed personal communication from team members to captains.2

Enrollment:

  • Individuals or teams may enroll by completing the official League enrollment form available at www.wvwalks.org. by 5:00 p.m., of the designated enrollment deadline.
  • A voluntary $2 - $5 per individual donation is encouraged (but not required) to help cover prize and other costs.
  • Additional information and both a Personal Walking Record and Team Report Form are available to enrollees from the website.

Prizes/Awards:

  • Month One Winner - $20 cash or gift certificate for each team member.
  • Month Two Winner - $20 cash or gift certificate for each team member.
  • Challenge Winner - $30 - 50 cash or gift certificate for each team member.

Other items to augment awards are solicited from interested parties. One such addition was half-hour massages for Challenge winners from a local provided for the Summer 2006 Challenge.

Sponsorships:

  • Companies and organizations are encouraged to sponsor a team and support their efforts.
  • Sponsorship contributions are requested to, at minimum, cover the cost of the team members' official league t-shirts.
  • Benefits of sponsorship accrue once sponsorship contributions are received by walking league officials (including official t-shirts to teams).

2 11-14-06 Rules Addendum – record of minutes walked. Before prizes are awarded, League officials must have verification of reported walking totals from Team Captains. For this purpose, it is advised that Captains collect signed Personal Walking Records (downloadable from www.wvwalks.org, clicking on “walking league” and following link) or a comparable signed record* from team members, and, that Captains maintain these records until all prizes are awarded.

*personal emails from individual team members with dates and minutes walked will suffice.
